Gedong Songo, also known as Candi Gedong Songo, is an impressive temple complex situated on the slopes of Mount Ungaran in Central Java, Indonesia. This historical and cultural heritage consists of nine temples, all dedicated to Hindu deities.
Location: Gedong Songo is located near Bandungan, in the Semarang Regency of North Central Java. The temples are perched on a hill approximately 1,270 meters (4,167 feet) high, near Mount Ungaran, and are spread across five Gedong groups—two on the eastern side of the hill, two in the north, and one in the west. In total, there are nine temples, all devoted to Shiva and Parvati.
History: The Gedong Songo complex was constructed during the early period of the Mataram Kingdom of Central Java. Similar to the Dieng Temples on the Dieng Plateau, the Gedong Songo temples were built from volcanic stone and represent some of the oldest Hindu structures in Java. These temples were erected either in the 8th or 9th century.
Architecture: The Gedong Songo temples exhibit architecture similar to those found on the Dieng Plateau, although with less variation in form. Notably, they emphasize pedestal and cornice decorations. Gedong Songo III is a Shiva temple paired with an opposite-facing Nandi shrine and a Parvati shrine adjacent to the Shiva shrine. Gedong Songo I is the oldest temple, featuring a square layout that predominates in Hindu and Buddhist-Hindu sites in Central Java. Temples Gedong Songo II to V are unusual, with a square sanctum area whose base has been expanded to create a veranda, giving it a rectangular shape.
The Gedong Songo temple complex is a popular tourist destination for its breathtaking views, well-preserved temples, and religious significance. These temples reflect impressive Hindu architecture and serve as a testament to the rich history and culture of Central Java.
Visit to Sam Po Kong, the largest Chinese temple, built in the 15th century by Chinese sailors. Next, explore the old town of Semarang, where you can discover the historic Blenduk Church with its impressive design, along with other notable buildings from the Dutch colonial era. Notably, there’s a building with a thousand doors across the street. Also included in the program are visits to the Lawang Sewu building and the Tugu Muda monument, which commemorates the bravery of Javanese youth.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you will have the opportunity to purchase some Semarang souvenirs at a gift shop before returning to the port. On this tour, you will visit the rainbow village, the so-called Desa Warna Warni in the city center. It also offers you a beautiful view of Semarang city from Gombel Hill.

A testament to Indonesia’s rich culture
Standing majestically on the plains of Central Java, Prambanan Temple is a testament to Indonesia’s rich cultural tapestry. This 9th-century Hindu temple complex, also known as Rara Jonggrang, is the largest in Indonesia and one of the most significant Hindu temples in Southeast Asia.
Marvel at the intricate carvings and towering spires that tell the ancient Ramayana epic through stone. Visitors are encouraged to explore the main temples dedicated to the Trimurti gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, each with their accompanying shrines.
The temple’s symmetry and geometry reflect Hindu cosmology and the belief in the link between the mortal and the divine. The site is not just a historical marvel but also a place where one can contemplate the grandeur of human creativity in harmony with spiritual significance.
As the sun sets, the temple’s silhouette against the crimson sky creates a breathtaking view, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. Remember to check the schedule for the Ramayana Ballet, an enchanting performance that brings the temple’s history to life under the stars.
